Elegant churches and architecture grace the Alcamo’s centre. The town’s churches are decorated by
works of art made by members of the Gagini family,
by Pietro Novelli and by Giacomo Serpotta, one of
the Sicilian masters of the Baroque. The urban centre, characterised by suggestive cobbled streets,
holds the fourteenth century Castello dei Conti di
Modica, the Torre De Ballis and two magnificent
examples of Gothic – Catalan art: Chiesa di Maria SS. Annunziata and Chiesa di San Tommaso.
The sanctuary of Maria SS. dei Miracoli stands in
the North of the town at the end of a downhill cobbled paving path. On the 19 th , 20 th and 21 st of June
there are pilgrimages to the sanctuary and various
events in honour of the patron saint of Alcamo, the
Madonna of Miracles.
